Digital X-Ray

If there is a way to better patient outcomes, you bet we will be on it. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, our number one priority is helping our patients achieve optimal oral health. One of the pieces of technology that help us achieve this goal is digital x-ray.

Digital x-ray is an x-ray system that does not need a darkroom for development of the pictures. The pictures are instantly displayed on a computer monitor. This technology saves us a lot of time, saves our patients’ time, it facilitates more accurate treatment plans, and it makes communication a breeze.

Putting the image onto the computer allows us to use tools that give us a closer look than ever before. Software also allows us to see changes in the mouth that could have previously been missed by the naked eye. This means more accurate diagnoses, treatment, and better patient outcomes.

Being digital means that we can print, save, or send the image. We can refer back to it for future visits and know exactly what kind of changes we are looking for. They can also be sent to other doctors for second opinions or to insurance companies instantly.

Along with these fantastic benefits, digital x-ray uses much less radiation, so it is safer for the patient. To learn more about the technology we use here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call us at (716) 877-2275 or visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Rotary Endodontics- New Technology for Successful Root Canals

As new technology becomes available, we like to keep up. One of the ways we do that here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY is by utilizing rotary endodontics. In the past, manual files had to be used to perform root canals. These days, rotary endodontics allows us to perform fast and gentle root canals with better results.

Rotary endodontics consists of a more flexible file that is attached to a dental drill. In the past, a rigid, steel file was used to manually clean out root canals. The flexible files allow us to reach down deep into the root canal without stretching the canal. This avoids damage and reduces pain both during the procedure and afterward. The electric drill allows us to be quicker and quieter.

If root canal stories of the past have scared you away from getting a necessary procedure performed, do not fear any longer. With the advancement of our dental practice, root canals barely cause any discomfort. To schedule an appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, give us a call at (716) 877-2275 or visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

What Turns Teeth Yellow?

As humans, our teeth consist of four types of tissues: dentin, pulp, enamel, and cementum. The pulp is the innermost layer of the tooth followed by dentin and the outer layer which is enamel. The cementum portion of the tooth is located at the base of the tooth, which holds the tooth in place along the jawline. When these parts of your teeth become yellow in color our doctors at Advantage Dentistry can discuss treatment options with you.

Dental enamel coats each tooth and acts as a protective shield. When the enamel erodes from too much acidic exposure, it causes yellowing to occur. Dentin which is the middle layer of the tooth naturally gives teeth a yellowish color. Dentin makes up most of the tooth and is a hard, yellow substance. Environmental factors can also cause teeth to turn yellow and so can different medications, smoking, and age. Smoking not only yellows teeth but it can do the same to fingernails. Age can factor into teeth yellowing because, over time, our enamel wears off, exposing dentin. Excessive tartar buildup can lead to yellowing of the teeth.

If your teeth are yellow, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about services we provide at the office, visit www.advantagedentistry.comfor more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our dentists at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call 716-877-2275.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Hundreds of different types of bacteria live on our teeth, gums, tongue and other crevices in the mouth. Some are helpful, but some can be harmful such as those that play a role in the tooth decay process. At Advantage Dentistry, we want our patients to know that good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay.

When a tooth is exposed to acid frequently – for example if you frequently eat foods or drinks containing sugar and starches – the repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. This will cause a white spot to appear if the minerals have been lost. When this happens, this is a sign of early decay.

You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental cleaner.

  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking.

  • Visit us at Advantage Dentistry for professional cleanings and oral examination.

If you need assistance maintaining your oral hygiene routine, give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Oral Conscious Sedation: Sit Back and Relax

While one of our doctors will decide which medications are appropriate for your dental treatment, being familiar with the type of sedation we offer at the practice might make you a little more comfortable during your next visit. Whether you suffer from dental anxiety or desire a little more relaxation in the dental chair, our staff at Advantage Dentistry is here to make you feel as comfortable and calm as possible through oral conscious sedation.

Depending on the total dose given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, you take a pill, and it’s usually taken about an hour before the procedure. This pill will make you drowsy, but you’ll still be awake and able to respond to the doctor’s questions and commands. Recovery may take a little longer with this type of sedation, and you’ll need an escort to drive you home for your safety.

If you suffer from dental fear, please inform us when scheduling your next appointment. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Bad Breath and How to Keep it Away

Bad breath can be frustrating, especially when it seems to be reoccurring. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we want to share some easy tips for keeping away bad breath and letting fresh breath reign!

There are certain types of bacteria that have a foul odor. This is usually what is causing bad breath. To combat these bacteria, you can do several things; keep good oral hygiene, keep hydrated, and consume foods and drinks that help fight the bacteria.

Brush your teeth two to three times per day and floss once per day every day. Also, be sure to clean the roof of your mouth, your tongue, and your inner cheeks.

Bad breath bacteria can multiply when the mouth dries out. So, the second most important part of keep fresh breath is staying hydrated. Make sure you are getting in your recommended amount of water each and every day!

There are also certain foods and drinks that help fight bacteria. For instance, green tea contains properties that fight off the bad odor-causing bacteria. Yogurt can do the same thing since it contains good live-and-active cultures.

If your bad breath isn’t going away, try these tips! To schedule your next cleaning and examination, call our Kenmore, NY office at (716) 877-2275. More information about Advantage Dentistry can be found on our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Avoid Staining to Keep Your Smile Bright

A while smile can turn heads and boost confidence! Are you unhappy with the shine of your smile? Our daily lives can contribute to staining, dullness, or yellowish color. Fortunately, here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we offer professional teeth whitening. In addition, take some of these tips for keeping your pearly whites white!

To keep stains away, you need to make sure you are keeping away plaque. Plaque is that layer of bacteria that forms on your teeth throughout the day. Brush your teeth three times per day to keep away plaque and to brush away stain-causing debris from food and drinks. If you smoke, this can also contribute to major staining over time. There is just one more reason to kick the habit.

Dark foods and drinks like blueberries, coffee, cola, and soy sauce can discolor teeth consumed frequently. When surface stains penetrate the enamel and darken the center of the tooth, the whole tooth can appear darker. Rinsing out your mouth after consuming dark foods and drinks will help keep the stains from sticking. For dark drinks, use a straw to limit the amount of liquid that touches your teeth.

To find out more about our professional whitening procedure, be sure to contact us. To schedule an appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call us at (716) 877-2275 or visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Extraction Site Preservation

When removing a tooth, it is important to consider what will be done with the empty space after that tooth is removed. Wisdom teeth are in the back of the mouth so that site has the ability to heal on its own with no complications. However, if it is necessary for one of our doctors at Advantage Dentistry to remove another tooth, plans must be made and this is where extraction site preservation comes into play.

If a tooth is removed and nothing is done with the extraction site, the jaw bone will degenerate and change shape during healing. This can cause teeth to shift and can create problems in your bite that can affect the ability to speak and chew. Just imagine chewing food with no teeth and how uncomfortable that would feel. Options for filling the space include dental implants and bridges. What you choose to do with your extraction site is your choice, and our doctors are always open to a conversation on what to do with your extraction site before removing a tooth.

If you’ve recently had teeth extracted and have questions about the site preservation process, give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Tooth Extractions

Occasionally, there is a tooth that is giving enough problems to be taken out. This is usually when there is too much damage or infection to save it. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we work hard to save teeth; however, we can perform experienced extractions when necessary.

To extract a tooth, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, or a general anesthetic, if the extraction is more complex. Often general anesthesia is used for wisdom teeth extractions. If an incision is needed to be made in the gums to remove the tooth, your dentist will make that incision and remove any bone tissue, if necessary. Using forceps, your doctor will rock the tooth back and forth until it is loose enough to be pulled out. Some cases need the tooth to be broken into pieces, first. Stitches are then applied, if necessary.

While it is always ideal to keep your teeth, there are many reasons a tooth may need to be extracted including damage, decay, infection, overcrowding, and more. Very commonly extracted teeth are the wisdom teeth.

If you are feeling dental pain that will not subside, it is important to have it examined. To schedule an appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at (716) 877-2275. More information about our practice can be found on our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Tooth Sensitivity

Does sipping on a hot or cold beverage send a sharp shooting pain into your tooth’s nerve? If you’ve answered yes, then you’ve likely developed tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity occurs when the enamel that protects our teeth gets thinner, or when gum recession occurs, exposing the underlying surface called the dentin, thus reducing the protection the enamel and gums provide to the tooth and root. At Advantage Dentistry, the treatment for your sensitive teeth will depend on the cause.

If you brush your teeth too hard or use a hard-bristled toothbrush, you may be setting yourself up for disaster. This method of brushing can wear down enamel and expose the dentin, causing you pain. Also, tooth decay, teeth grinding, and gum disease are also culprits of tooth sensitivity. The best way to control the sensitive situation in addition to scheduling regular dental checkups is by practicing and maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine.

If you are bothered by sensitive teeth, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Anxiolysis Sedation

The purpose of oral sedation is to allow a dentist to work more effectively by helping a patient become as comfortable as possible with the use of sedative medications administered orally and sublingually. Here at Advantage Dentistry, our doctors utilize a safe and effective minimal sedation called anxiolysis – a drug-induced state during which patients respond normally to verbal commands.

The definition of anxiolysis is simply, a reduction in anxiety. Although cognitive function and coordination may be impaired, ventilatory and cardiovascular functions are unaffected. In the spectrum of sedation, anxiolysis is the lightest level of sedation. Anxiolysis involves the use of a single anxiolytic drug in a single dose, prescribed before a patient’s appointment, and administered prior to the beginning of the dental appointment. The anxiolysis technique can be administered in fearful and anxious patients as well as patients with a pronounced gag reflex.

After the procedure, you will even be able to drive yourself home since anxiolysis uses a light sedative. If you have been fretting having dental work done, call us to learn about our anxiety-free options for dentistry. Dangers of Sleep Apnea

Everyone agrees that snoring isn’t a good thing, but when it starts to affect your breathing it becomes an even bigger problem.  When snoring disrupts your nighttime rest, makes you sleepy during the daytime and is the reason for your boosting blood pressure, you may be suffering from sleep apnea without even knowing it.  At Advantage Dentistry, our doctors can provide you with an individualized treatment plan depending on the severity of your sleep apnea case once you are diagnosed.

People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain -- and the rest of the body -- may not get enough oxygen. Aside from experiencing high blood pressure, daytime fatigue, or sleep-deprived partners, people with sleep apnea may also complain of memory problems, morning headaches, mood swings or feelings of depression.

If you or your partner suspects that you have sleep apnea, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. What is Nitrous Oxide?

Some people would rather endure the agony of a toothache rather than step foot in a dentist’s office, while others simply desire relaxation during an appointment. Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is one option one of our doctors may offer to patients to help make them more comfortable during certain procedures. If you are a candidate for sedation, our staff at Advantage Dentistry is here to make you feel as calm and comfortable as possible.

Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used form of sedation dentistry. It is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. It is not intended to put you to sleep. Therefore, you will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the doctor may have for you. When nitrous oxide is being administered you will breathe normally through your nose and within a few short minutes begin to feel the effects.

If you experience dental fear, please inform us the next time you make an appointment. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Facts on Fluoride

Fluoride is a natural mineral found throughout the earth’s crust and widely distributed in nature and is often added to water to help reduce tooth decay. Research has shown that fluoride not only reduces cavities in children and adults, but it also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay, even before the decay is visible. Here at Advantage Dentistry, we can discuss professional fluoride treatments with you to see if you are a prime candidate.

When fluoride reaches your teeth, it is absorbed into the enamel. Fluoride helps to repair the enamel by replenishing the lost calcium and phosphorus to keep your teeth hard through a process called remineralization. When fluoride is present during this process, the minerals deposited into the tooth enamel help strengthen your teeth and prevent dissolution during the next demineralization phase. The results are stronger tooth enamel and a cavity-free grin.

If you think you may benefit from a fluoride treatment, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

How Painful is the Dental Implant Procedure?

If you are receiving dental implants in the near future, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry don’t want you to be frightened, we want you to be informed on what to expect. Pain is a common concern among individuals who are considering dental implants and we want you to know that while some discomfort is expected, it shouldn’t be your primary concern.

As with any major dental procedure, or surgery in general, some discomfort is to be expected during the recovery process since it is a surgery that typically involves removing teeth, cutting gums, drilling into the jawbone and inserting a titanium post. The procedure itself is not painful since it is performed with either general or local anesthesia to completely numb your mouth. If you’re anxious about the discomfort during the procedure and being aware of drilling noises and forces being applied to your mouth, please ask us about our sedation options.

If you have questions about dental implants or sedation options give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.comfor more information about the services we provide.

How Invisalign Works to Move Teeth

If you want a straighter smile and healthier teeth and gums, orthodontic treatment may help. Orthodontic treatment involves correcting malocclusion, which is the misalignment of a bite or incorrect spacing between teeth. Here at Advantage Dentistry, we offer Invisalign to our patients so that they can straighten their teeth with comfort and confidence. Invisalign uses a custom-made series of plastic aligners created for you and only you. So how do these plastic aligners actually move your teeth?

The teeth-straightening process will vary from person to person, but the basic idea stays the same. First, one of our doctors will take X-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth, and then use that information to create a treatment plan. Through the use of Invisalign’s patented thermoplastic design, Invisalign aligners move your teeth through the appropriate placement of controlled force. The biggest difference is that the aligners not only control the force, but also the timing of the force application. During each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move. Invisalign allows our patients to straighten their teeth without the stress of tightening brackets and wires. Give us a call if you want to get started, today.

If you would like to discuss your orthodontic treatment options, please give us a call or visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about Invisalign. To book an appointment with one of our dentists at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call 716-877-2275.

Choosing the Correct Mouthwash

Mouthwash or rinses are used for a variety of reasons: to freshen breath, to help prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque, to prevent or reduce gingivitis, to reduce the speed that tartar forms on the teeth, or to produce a combination of these effects. Mouthwash has a few beneficial properties and our doctors at Advantage Dentistry would like to explain some of them.

  • Antimicrobial agents act directly on oral bacteria to help reduce plaque, decrease the severity of gingivitis and control bad breath.

  • Fluoride helps reduce tiny lesions (tooth decay) on tooth enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay.

  •  Astringent salts can serve as temporary deodorizers that mask bad breath.

  • Odor neutralizers act by chemically inactivating odor causing compounds.

Basics of Bruxism

If your teeth are worn, damaged, or sensitive, or if you have pain in your jaw, face, or ear, it may be time to visit our staff at Advantage Dentistry. These are common symptoms of bruxism, a condition in which you grind, gnash, or clench your teeth and the condition can have a variety of causes. Some experts view this issue as nothing more than a habit, but this habit can wreak serious havoc on your teeth, provoking you to endure invasive dental procedures in the future.

People with severe bruxism can break dental fillings or damage their teeth. Rubbing the teeth together can cause the outer layers of enamel to wear away, exposing dentin, which can lead to tooth sensitivity. Severe bruxism can also be the result of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders as well as unexplained facial pain. If our doctor determines that you’re a “bruxer” he or she will discuss the best way to treat the condition. The treatment of bruxism typically depends on the cause.

If you suspect that you may be a “bruxer,” please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Ridge Augmentation

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement that is able to last a lifetime; however, the conditions need to be right to place them. For patients that do not have a large enough bone ridge in their jaw, at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we can perform ridge augmentation. This ensures that implants are a possible option for replacement.

To begin the procedure, your doctor will lift the gums away from the bone. Bone graft material will then be placed into the area where the bone has deteriorated. Afterwards, the incision is closed and allowed to heal. The augmentation will take about twelve months to fully heal. During this time, the bone graft material will not only bond with your jawbone, but it will also promote the growth of even more jawbone. The end result is a strong ridge that is big enough to host a dental implant successfully. Depending on your specific case, a dental implant may be able to be placed during the augmentation procedure or after the twelve-month healing period.

Bone grafting is a very safe and successful procedure. The bone is often able to be taken from another area of your jaw.

To learn more about ridge augmentation and bone grafting, be sure to contact us or visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com. To schedule an appointment with Advantage Dentistry in our Kenmore, NY office, call us at (716) 877-2275.

Electric Toothbrushes vs Manual Toothbrushes

There is often a debate about whether or not electric toothbrushes clean your teeth better than manual ones. As it turns out, the American Dental Association says manual toothbrushes can do just as good of a job as electric ones. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we want all of our patients to know how to take good care of their teeth. Check out the differences between electric and manual toothbrushes.

As previously mentioned, the ADA has said that manual toothbrushes do just as good of a job at cleaning teeth as electric toothbrushes. It is mostly about the job the brusher is doing. However, this may change for those who have trouble using their hands. Those with conditions like arthritis may benefit from using an electric toothbrush since they do almost all of the work; you just need to hold them at the correct angle.

Electric toothbrushes do have other benefits, like timers and music. They let you know you are spending enough time brushing and also get kids more interested in brushing.

So while either toothbrush has the ability to do a good job, it really depends on the brusher and their needs. To set up your next dental exam and cleaning at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at (716) 877-2275. For more information about us, visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Choosing the Correct Toothpaste

When stepping foot into the oral hygiene aisle at the drugstore, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry understand that the selections of toothpaste can be overwhelming. Should you go for tartar control, fluoride, sensitive or whitening toothpaste? When it comes to choosing the toothpaste that is best for you, it’s important to consider your unique oral health needs. Here are some options to consider while browsing:

  • Anti-cavity: This type of toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride plays an active role in preventing decay, and it actively strengthens tooth enamel.

  • Anti-gingivitis: If you spit blood in the sink, this is an early sign of gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Anti-gingivitis toothpaste helps reduce oral bacteria and can be very effective at stopping gingivitis in its tracks.

  • Desensitizing: If you’ve ever bit into an ice cream cone and felt a sharp pain in your tooth’s nerve, this type of toothpaste will provide relief by blocking the tooth’s pain signal to the nerve.

  • Tartar-control: This toothpaste does exact what it says, however, the best way to remove tartar is by scheduling a professional dental cleaning with one of our doctors.

  • Whitening: This toothpaste contains chemicals that are able to help maintain the natural color of your teeth.

If you have questions regarding oral hygiene, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call 716-877-2275.

Oral Care for Senior Citizens

Advancing age puts many seniors at risk for a number of oral health problems. These problems include but are not limited to darkened teeth, dry mouth, gum disease, tooth loss, root decay and gum disease. Here at Advantage Dentistry, we have plenty of restorative options for our patients to choose from if they are candidates. However, we encourage you to take care of your teeth on a regular basis, no matter how old you are.

Seniors are more likely to suffer from a host of oral health issues resulting from their inability to provide themselves with adequate dental hygiene care. Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the hands and fingers that may make brushing or flossing teeth difficult to perform. These factors leave many seniors at risk of ignoring tooth decay and tooth infection until there is no alternative but tooth extraction. With regular checkups, problems can be caught in the earliest stages to help prevent serious conditions from occurring.

Benefits of a Tongue Scraper

When we sleep, our digestive system remains awake, removing toxins from our body by depositing them onto the surface of our tongue. This causes bad breath (halitosis) which can wreak havoc on a person’s life, relationships, and self-esteem. Our doctors at Advantage Dentistry want you to achieve the freshest breath possible. This is why we recommend implementing a tongue scraper into your daily oral care routine if you haven’t already.

Although brushing your tongue with a toothbrush is effective, overall, a tongue scraper does the job better. Almost all of our oral bacteria live on and in the deep crevices of our tongue; therefore, the scraping action of this tongue tool collects these toxic coatings. With a cleaner tongue, you are able to reduce bad breath, as well as unblock your taste buds. Removing build-up from the surface of your tongue will open up its pores and allow for greater enjoyment of food flavors. This oral hygiene practice also promotes general tooth and gum health and removes bacteria and toxins responsible for periodontal problems, tooth decay, and even tooth loss.

If you suffer from bad breath, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information. Stages of Gum Disease

If you want to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime, then you need to practice a proper oral hygiene routine on a daily basis. If you don’t, you’re already headed down the road toward gum disease. Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth and there are three stages that you need to be aware of. You should always schedule professional cleanings and oral exams with one of our doctors at Advantage Dentistry twice a year to avoid this condition.

  • Gingivitis – This is the earliest stage of gum disease, an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup at the gum line. If daily brushing and flossing do not remove the plaque, it produces toxins that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis. This is when you’ll notice blood in the sink after you complete your brushing routine. However, at this early stage, damage can be reversed, since the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected.

  • Periodontitis – This is the second stage of gum disease. By this point, the supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place are irreversibly damaged. Your gums may even begin to form a pocket below the gum line, which traps food and plaque.

  • Advanced Periodontitis – This is the final stage of gum disease, and the fibers and bone supporting your teeth is officially destroyed. In this case, your teeth may begin to shift or loosen and your bite may also be affected. If aggressive treatment can’t save them, the teeth will need to be extracted.

If you are experiencing gum inflammation, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. When an Extraction Could Help

Sometimes extracting a tooth is necessary for the health of your mouth. It is ideal to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible; however, it can be better to extract a problematic tooth if it is affecting your health. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we want our patients to understand why sometimes extracting a tooth is the right thing to do.

Decay

When decay is so bad that a filling or crown cannot fix the tooth, an extraction is the best option. Decay can lead to infection. Infection can affect the gums and other teeth. In addition, it can lead to other health risks like heart problems. This is especially important for patients with compromised immune systems.

Space

There are also cases where there just is not room for a tooth. Crowded teeth can become painful, they can lead to bad oral hygiene, and they can damage other teeth. Because they create hard-to-reach areas, bacteria can build up and cause gum disease and decay. They can create abnormal wear on teeth, creating pain and damage. Space is a common issue with wisdom teeth.

Tooth extraction is common and something we are able to provide here at our office. If you are experiencing pain to a tooth, be sure to come in for an examination. To schedule with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at (716) 877-2275. To learn more about us, visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

The Importance of Replacing a Missing Tooth

Missing teeth create gaps in our smiles, affect our oral health, and can even change the shape of your face. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we have several options available for tooth replacement. Read on to learn more about why it is important to replace your missing teeth.

Teeth are what allow us to eat, speak, smile, and they give our jaws structure. When a tooth goes missing, the bone tissue around that area begins to deteriorate. This can change the shape of the jaw and facial structure if there are multiple teeth missing. In the case where there is only one tooth missing, the other teeth will begin to shift towards that open space. This creates gaps in other areas.  The gaps affect the look of your smile and become places where bacteria and other debris can hide. A major change in your teeth can affect the way you eat and speak.

At our Kenmore, NY office, we have dental implants, mini dental implants, dentures, and bridges available for tooth replacement. Your dentist will help you decide which option is best for you.

To schedule your tooth replacement consultation, call Advantage Dentistry of Kenmore, NY at (716) 877-2275. To learn more about our replacement options, visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Gum Disease: How Does it Develop?

We all hear about how we need to avoid gum disease, but do you know what it really is and how it develops? Knowing may be the difference between developing it or not. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we strive to educate our patients on oral health. Read on to learn more about gum disease.

Gum disease refers to infected gum tissue in your mouth. This tissue is what creates a strong foundation for your teeth, so when it becomes diseased, it can weaken and cause teeth to call out. It can also spread infection, cause deformation of the jawbone, and increase the risks of heart attack and stroke.

Gum disease develops when plaque and tartar irritate the tissue around teeth. If not treated, the gums begin to separate and pull away from the teeth causing deep pockets to form where bacteria can collect deep down. This is the most difficult stage of gum disease to treat.

In order to prevent gum disease, you need to brush your teeth twice per day and floss once per day. When brushing, be sure to pay special attention to the gum line. Make sure you angle your toothbrush so that the area where your teeth meet your gums gets attention. In addition, brush your tongue, your cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. There are areas where bacteria can also hide.

Routine visits to your dentist can also help keep away gum disease. To schedule a cleaning and examination at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at (716) 877-2275. More information about us can be found on our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Details on Dental Emergencies

At Advantage Dentistry, our staff understands that accidents happen and being informed about what to do in case one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. If you or your child experience some sort of trauma to your mouth for whatever reason, please give us a call immediately. Meanwhile, in the midst of a dental emergency, utilize these tips to ensure a smooth recovery.

  • For a knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it between your cheek and gums, or use a tooth preservation product that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.

  • For a cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area.

  • If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.

  • For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between teeth.

Show Off Your Smile!

With instant photo sharing happening all around us, our staff at Advantage Dentistry always wants your smile to be camera-ready. If you think your smile could use a boost, teeth whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color, if you would like. However, if you can’t go the cosmetic route at this moment, our staff thought we would share some tips for you to show off the smile you already have!

  • Be natural – when it’s picture time, smile gently. That way, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth opens slightly, and your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth.

  • Check your teeth and gums – getting your smile camera-ready sometimes calls for a little behind the scenes prep work. If your pearly whites have yellowed with age, try an over-the-counter whitening product or pay us a visit! Also, don’t forget about taking care of your gums. They play a critical role in your nice smile. So keep them in good shape by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash every day.

  • Practice – your perfect smile may not happen overnight, but if you have a big photo event like a wedding or a graduation coming up, it doesn’t hurt to try out your grin in front of the mirror!

If you wish to enhance the appearance of your smile, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Scaling and Planing to Clear Gum Disease

Gum disease can completely ruin the health of your mouth, along with your overall health. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we provide scaling and root planing to our patients with gum disease so they can work towards a clean, healthy mouth.

When hardened plaque (tartar) causes the gums to recede, bacteria can reach deep down by the tooth’s root. In order to clear up the gum disease, the teeth need to be scraped clean. Scaling and planing is the process of cleaning the teeth between the gums, down to the root, and smoothing out rough spots on the root. Rough spots on the root can trap bacteria, making it difficult to fully clear up gum disease.

A scraping tool is used to remove plaque and tartar. Scaling and planing can take a few appointments as the mouth is usually worked on in sections. After the process is complete, a regular oral heal routine of brushing twice daily and flossing once daily will be recommended to continue on the way to healthy gums. In addition, you will want to get frequent professional cleanings from your dentist.

Gum disease can be detrimental. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at (716) 877-2275. More information and dental resources can be found on our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Custom Mouth Guards

Sports are a great source of health and fun, but they do increase the risk for injury; in contact sports especially. Injury to the mouth can lead to lacerations, broken teeth, and missing teeth. This is why Advantage Dentistry of Kenmore, NY is offering our patients custom mouth guards.

Protection and comfort of our patients are very important to us. Our custom-fit mouth guard is created to fit each individual in the best way. Store-bought mouth guards are all the same but every mouth is different. The wrong fit results in poor protection. Our custom-fit mouth guards offer the best protection, the best comfort, and allow for easy breathing.

The thin plastic the mouth guards are made from is easy to wear, yet durable. The mouth guard protects injuries to your teeth, your jaw, your lips, tongue, and cheeks. Injuries to these areas can be painful and will likely need medical and dental attention. Not to mention, the injury may put you on the sidelines for a while. It is better to prevent such injuries from happening instead of dealing with pain when it does happen.

If you or someone you know could benefit from a custom mouth guard, schedule an appointment with Advantage Dentistry. Appointments can be made by calling our Kenmore, NY office at (716) 877-2275. More information may be found on our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Teeth Shapes, Sizes and Functions

Have you ever smiled in the mirror and wondered why all of your teeth are different shapes and sizes? The reason for this is because each of them has different types of functions. Each tooth is made up of several parts: pulp, cementum, dentin, and enamel. Our staff at Advantage Dentistry encourages you to read on if you desire to learn more about the different types of teeth you have and the purpose they serve in your mouth.

  • Incisors – located at the front of the mouth, these teeth have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting or shearing food into small chewable pieces.

  • Canines – located at the ‘corners’ of the dental arches, these teeth have a sharp pointed biting surface. Their function is to grip and tear food.

  • Premolars – Unlike incisors and canines, these teeth have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food.

  • Molars – The molars are the largest teeth in the mouth and they too have a large flat biting surface. The function of these is perhaps the strongest of all as they chew, crush, and grind food.

If you have questions about your teeth, don’t hesitate to give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call 716-877-2275.

Reasons Teeth Become Tender

If you avoid eating cold foods or drinking hot beverages because your teeth are a little sensitive, it may be time to get to the root of this problem. If you have tender teeth, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry may offer dental sealants or fluoride treatments to decrease sensitivity. Sometimes the solution can be as simple as breaking bad habits. If you catch yourself performing any of the following tasks, do your best to stop yourself in your tracks.

  • You’re brushing too hard – over time, if you brush with too much force, you can wear down the protective layers of your teeth and expose the microscopic hollow tubes or canals that lead to your dental nerves. When these tubules are exposed, tooth sensitivity is a result.

  • You’re eating too many acidic foods – If the pathways to your nerves are exposed, acidic foods will cause you pain.

  • You have tooth decay – If you have tooth decay, it’s easy for bacteria to accumulate in these tiny crevices, which causes acid build-up and enamel breakdown.

  • You’re a tooth grinder – Grinding your teeth can wear down your enamel. This exposes the dentin and causes sensitive teeth.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call 716-877-2275.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Hearing you need your wisdom teeth extracted may get you wondering about why you have those wisdom teeth anyway. With wisdom teeth extraction being as common as it is, many of our patients wonder this. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we are going to answer this question, and more!

Wisdom teeth are so commonly extracted because there simply is not enough room in the mouth for them to grow in properly. They often cause problems with cleanliness, pain, and destruction of other teeth. So why do we have them, anyway?

The answer dates back about 20,000 years ago. Humans back then had tougher diets; eating foods like nuts, roots, and uncooked meat. It is thought that they needed the extra teeth to chew through those tougher foods. However, these days we really no longer need the extra help. Our jaws and facial structures have shrunken over the years, which may be a nod to evolution. This also explains why so many patients need their wisdom teeth to be extracted. A smaller jaw means less room for those far-back teeth.

Wisdom teeth can cause real pain and can lead to infection if not cared for properly. If your wisdom teeth are starting to grow in, come see us for an evaluation. Call (716) 877-2275 to schedule an appointment in our Kenmore, NY office. Visit our Advantage Dentistry website, www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about us.

Periodontal Splinting for Loose Teeth

Loose teeth need to be secured before they become too loose and fall out. There are several things that can cause teeth to loosen, which is why here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we offer periodontal splinting to our patients.

Periodontal splinting involves making one unit out of stable teeth and the loose tooth or teeth. The stable teeth provide structure so that the loose teeth are no longer mobile. This procedure is performed using composite resin. The resin is applied to the backs of the teeth where it is not noticeable. The end result is strong, in-place teeth.

Teeth can become loose for many different reasons. A common reason is periodontal disease. When the gum tissue surrounding a tooth recedes, it can cause extra room between the tooth and the gums. If steps are not taken to improve the area and stop teeth from moving, they can become loose enough to fall out.

If you are experiencing loose teeth, come see us for an evaluation. Periodontal splinting may be what saves your smile. To schedule an appointment in our Kenmore, NY office, call Advantage Dentistry at (716) 877-2275. Dentures for a Smile That is You

Missing teeth can cause trouble with eating, talking, and it can even affect confidence. Why not look for a solution that so many patients have had success with? Here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we offer full and partial dentures for patients who are missing some or all of their teeth.

Dentures have been around for a long time; even George Washington wore them! They are able to complete your smile again and make chewing and talking enjoyable once more. Many patients are surprised at how natural their dentures can look; they bring your true smile back!

For patients who have lost most or all of their teeth, a full set of dentures will be required. We create upper and lower dentures that look natural to you. These dentures are able to be placed immediately or conventionally.

For patients who have just lost a few teeth, we offer partial dentures. These dentures are similar to dental bridges, in that abutments attached to other teeth keep them in place. However, partial dentures are removable, unlike bridges which are permanently bonded into place.

If it is time to replace the missing teeth in your smile, dentures may be the perfect option for you. To set up a consultation with Advantage Dentistry of Kenmore, NY, call our office at (716) 877-2275. Inlays and Onlays for Attractive Restorations

Having the perfect smile is a dream, but often it can be hard to maintain. When teeth have chips, cracks, or decay, they can begin to show it. Fortunately, here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we offer several options for restoring teeth back to looking great. Inlays and onlays are a couple of those options.

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations that are able to be tooth-colored. The composite resin used is matched to the shade of your teeth for a seamless repair. Inlays are a restoration that covers the chewing surface of the tooth, minus any cusps. Onlays are a restoration that repairs the chewing surface of a tooth, plus one or more of the cusps. Inlays and onlays do not fully cover the tooth like a crown, so they are used for when there is less damage, but more damage than a filling could fix.

In order to get our customers the best restorations, we take impressions of your teeth so that a dental laboratory can make the inlay or onlay custom. When the restoration is ready, it will be bonded to your tooth. With great care, an inlay or onlay can last for up to thirty years.

If you hide your smile when you laugh or try not to show your teeth in pictures, a restoration that is both healthy and cosmetically- pleasing may be just what you need. To schedule an appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY call our office at (716) 877-2275. To learn more about inlays and onlays, visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Lip Tie and Tongue Tie Solution: Frenectomy

Lip tie and tongue tie can cause some major frustrations both in infancy and in the other stages of life. Luckily, there is a very safe and routine procedure to fix these conditions. Advantage Dentistry performs frenectomies right here in our Kenmore, NY dental office.

When the piece of tissue, called the frenulum, that attaches the lips to the gums is too short or too tight, this is called lip tie. It can also occur within the frenulum that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth. These conditions can create problems with infants feeding along with more issues in childhood and adulthood.

If an infant cannot feed properly, they will sustain a low weight and may not grow as quickly as they should. Breastfeeding mothers can also suffer from these complications as irregular feeding will affect her milk production and problems with latching can hurt the nipple. In childhood and adulthood, lip tie and tongue tie can lead to problems with oral cleanliness, talking, and eating. It can also affect activities like whistling, playing an instrument, and kissing.

In our Kenmore, NY office, we offer a solution, called a frenectomy. This is a simple, quick, and safe procedure performed right here in our office. The frenulum is simply detached so it can heal with more range of motion. A local anesthesia is used and there is minimal bleeding afterward. Frenectomy has a very high success rate.

If you believe a frenectomy could benefit you or someone you love, come see us for a consultation. To set up an appointment, call Advantage Dentistry of Kenmore, NY at (716) 877-2275. For more information about frenectomies, visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Crown Lengthening

Tooth decay can sometimes do so much damage, that repair needs to be performed under the gum line. When this occurs, a crown lengthening is needed. Here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY we perform this routine procedure for many of our patients. It is important to keep as many real teeth as you have, which is why crown lengthening is key.

To successfully lengthen the crown of the tooth, we actually take away some of the gum tissue. To begin, your dentist will make cuts to the gum tissue to pull it away from the teeth. Even if only one tooth needs to be worked on, the gum tissue surrounding a few teeth will be pulled back so that the gum line looks natural. If any bone tissue also needs to be removed, it will be removed at this point. Then, your dentist will stitch the gum tissue into place to heal. The teeth are now ready for any work they may need. If a crown is being placed on the tooth, your dentist will want to wait until the gums have healed for proper crown placement.

Be careful when brushing in the area until healing has progressed. Avoid the gum line and do not use floss. Instead, use a toothpick to remove any debris.

Crown lengthening can save a tooth from infection or extraction. To schedule an appointment with Advantage Dentistry here in Kenmore, NY, give our office a call at (716) 877-2275. Additional information may be found at our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Dental Sealants for Extra Protection

When it comes to dental care and kids, we can plead and plead them to take good care of their teeth. However, kids do not always brush and floss as they should. Even with good brushing, especially during the cavity-prone years, kids can still sustain cavities. This is why here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we offer dental sealants.

Sealants are a great way to protect the molars from decay. Since the molars have pits and grooves in them, food, bacteria, and other debris can become stuck in those hard-to-reach places. Sealants literally “seal out” the bacteria to protect the teeth during the cavity-prone years of six to fourteen.

Sealants are a plastic coating that is painted on and hardened over the pits of the molars. They are great for children but can also benefit adults who have never had a cavity or a filling. Fillings can last for over ten years, depending on chewing habits.

To apply a sealant, the teeth are cleaned and dried. An acid solution is then placed over the tooth to roughen the surface. This aids a stronger bond. The tooth is rinsed and dried. The sealant is then painted over the tooth and hardened. Patients are able to eat normally very soon afterward.

If you are looking for some extra protection, sealants are a great idea. To schedule an appointment here in our Kenmore, NY dental practice, call Advantage Dentistry at (716) 877-2275. To learn more about sealants, visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Veneers for a Perfect Smile

Are you looking for a change in your look? Nothing compliments your features better than a beautiful smile! Here at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we offer dental veneers to our patients looking to improve the look of their smile.

Dental imperfections like chips, cracks, discoloration, gaps, and misaligned teeth can really make a person want to hide their smile. While it is common that a person is not totally confident in their smile, it doesn’t have to be this way. Dental veneers are a way to almost instantly improve the look of these dental issues and many more.

Veneers are thin, ceramic shells that are bonded over your existing teeth. There is no major dental work needed like surgery or orthodontics. The veneers are specifically created for you in a dental laboratory so they look and feel natural to your own smile.

To apply veneers, your dentist will first prepare your tooth. A thin layer of enamel will be removed to fit the veneer over the tooth. When all of the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken of your teeth so the laboratory can make the veneers exactly for you. You will wear temporary veneers during this time. A couple of weeks later, your custom veneers are bonded into place. You now have a perfect smile! It is instantly ready to show off.

If you are interested in boosting your number one accessory, your smile, veneers can be the perfect cosmetic option. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry here in Kenmore, NY, call us at (716) 877-2275. For more information, visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Night Guards for Grinding and Clenching

Grinding teeth at night is a condition that many patients do not realize they have until their partner tells them they have heard them doing it. Teeth grinding (bruxism) can cause serious damage to the teeth, the jaw, and facial structures. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we help our patients minimize the damage done by grinding their teeth with custom night guards.

Night guards are mouth guards specifically designed to stand up to clenching and grinding. They are custom-made so that they fit each patient’s mouth. They are a barrier between the top and the bottom teeth that provide the best protection and the best comfort. There are “one size fits all” mouth guards on the market, but they are often ill-fitting and uncomfortable for breathing.

We take impressions of your teeth so that a dental laboratory can create the mouth guard from scratch. They are made to be very durable and have the ability to be used for up to ten years. This will fluctuate with each patient, of course depending on the severity of their grinding.

Without any protection, clenching and grinding teeth can loosen fillings and other restorations, wear down enamel, and irritate the gums. Worn down or damaged teeth can create sensitivity and introduce routes for infection.

If you are a night grinder or suspect you are, come in for an examination. To schedule your appointment in our Kenmore, NY office, call Advantage Dentistry at (716) 877-2275 or visit our website, www.advantagedentistry.com

Dental Crowns for Strengthening and Protecting Teeth

When teeth are weak, they are at risk for even more damage. When weakened teeth still have a healthy root, at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, we utilize dental crowns. Dental crowns save a weak tooth from further damage, restore its functionality, and improve a smile.

Dental crowns are often needed when there is a cavity or other damage that is too large for a filling. It is a cap that goes on a tooth when the root is still intact. The tooth is reshaped so that the crown can fit on top. We are able to make crowns of gold, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal. The crown is able to look and feel just like a normal tooth, so your smile will look complete again. We do this by taking impressions of the reshaped tooth and the area surrounding it and sending it to a dental laboratory. The dental lab creates the completely custom tooth within a couple of weeks. During this time, we will fit you with a temporary crown so you can continue use of that tooth. When the permanent crown is cemented into place, it can last for up to fifteen years with good care.
