Winter Lip Care

With another Buffalo-area winter upon us, we at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore wanted to ensure our patients know how to protect their lips. This time of year, lips often get chapped, but damage can be prevented with the right precautions.

Our lips get dry and fragile in the winter because the cold air can’t hold much moisture. Our best bet to protect them outside is to keep our faces tightly covered and face away from the wind. But inside, we can station humidifiers around our homes and workplaces, particularly in rooms where we have to spend a great deal of time. Remember that very hot showers can dry out your skin. Applying lip balm regularly helps, particularly before bed. The only problem with that is that menthol and some other ingredients cause irritation to worsen in some people.

It’s not a good idea to keep the lips wet with saliva. This actually makes them dry out faster since saliva evaporates quickly. Keeping the lips under the teeth should also be avoided because it can cause misalignments. If your lips are dry because you have to breathe through your mouth, you may need help from an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

Oral Cancer and Alcohol

Screenings for oral cancer are one of the most important parts of regular check-ups, and at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, we’re determined to help upkeep every aspect of our patients’ oral health. To that end, we wanted to pass along some recent findings by the American Society of Clinical Oncology linking oral cancer to alcohol.

Tobacco usage and HPV are the best-known and researched causes of oral cancer. We’ve known for a long time that smoking combined with heavy drinking is extremely dangerous, but scientists had difficulty determining the carcinogenic effect of alcohol on its own. After reviewing the available literature, the ASCO concluded that 5% of new cancers globally are caused by alcohol and that oral and oropharyngeal cancers are among the types alcohol causes. It may be that alcohol damages the soft tissue of the mouth and that the more frequently it has to rebuild, the likelier it is that some DNA will be miscopied. But regardless of the exact mechanism, it seems that even light drinking poses a risk, although heavy drinking is worse. The study also found that when people stop drinking, their risk of cancer specifically in the mouth and oropharynx declines to that of people who never drank.

Oral Surgery Recovery

There are several reasons why a patient may need oral surgery but the most common reasons here at Advantage Dentistry are tooth extraction and/or receiving dental implants. Wisdom teeth are commonly removed because they increase a patient’s risk of infection, while dental implants are an option for patients who are missing teeth. Regardless of why you need an oral surgery procedure, we are here to assist you on your road to recovery.

After the oral surgery procedure is complete, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry will give you a list of foods to eat afterward. You will be consuming a soft diet for a few days to allow the sutures to heal. Swelling is normal after tooth extraction but to keep swelling down to a minimum, use an ice pack to alleviate pain. Bleeding is normal but can be controlled by placing wet gauze on the extraction site. Keep the area as clean as possible but do not resume your oral hygiene routine until instructed to do so.

If you have questions or concerns about oral surgery, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Why Should We Floss?

You just had your routine dental appointment and perhaps our doctor at Advantage Dentistry told you to floss more. But you didn’t listen and you went home and tossed the floss right in the junk drawer. Well, you better retrieve it because we are here to tell you why you should utilize this tool that fights against periodontal disease, tooth decay, and help you keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime.

Floss removes food particles that weren’t brushed away. These food particles feed on plaque and can turn into tartar if not removed. If you’re afraid to floss because your gums are bleeding this is the number one reason to floss more and not less. Gingivitis can be reversed by flossing at least twice a day for a week straight, but remember, you’ll need to keep up the routine to keep a healthy smile.

If you have questions or concerns regarding oral hygiene and dental health, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Dental Implant Restoration

If a person is missing one or more teeth, this can be detrimental to his or her self-esteem. A toothless smile is just as bad for your oral health. Dental implants allow easier access between teeth to make brushing and flossing easier. Dental implants provide a strong foundation for permanent teeth and dental bridges and they are made to match your natural teeth. Our doctors at Advantage Dentistry are here to tell you all about the benefits of dental implants.

Missing teeth can cause the face to sag, making a person appear older than they are. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth, therefore they allow you to improve speech, improve oral health, and making eating and speaking much easier and less frustrating. Implants are very durable and will last a lifetime if taken care of. To get started on the road to restoring your smile, give our doctors a call.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental implants or restorative dentistry, please give us a call. Sensitivity with Fillings

When patients suffer from tooth decay, they know they can count on treatment at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore. Our patients’ cosmetic care is of special importance to us, and the fillings we provide are not only high-quality but also colored to match patients’ teeth. But fillings work best when we have the cooperation of well-informed patients, which is why we want them to understand what it means if a tooth with a filling is sensitive.

Before a filling can be placed, the decayed enamel has to be drilled away. This may make a patient feel sore, but only for two days, at most. However, if pain spikes when the patient bites down or if the patient is unable to close their teeth together normally, the filling may be too high and need to be contoured.

High fillings are rare, but at some point, the bonding holding the filling in will break down. Fillings typically have a lifespan of about ten years. After that, cracks in the bonding will become a refuge for bacteria, which will continue to produce decay-causing acid and cause the tooth to need retreatment. Patients can avoid that by maintaining regular visits, so we’ll catch fillings that need to be replaced early.

Diabetes and Invisalign

People with diabetes are used to paying extra attention to the health of their feet and eyes, and they need to take extra care with their oral health, as well. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, we work closely with our diabetic patients to ensure they are protected from gingivitis and periodontal disease, which they suffer from at higher rates than the general population. This American Diabetes Month, we want to raise awareness of how diabetes interacts with orthodontics.

Because braces make oral hygiene more difficult, dentists in the past were reluctant to recommend them for diabetic patients. People who have suffered from periodontitis may find themselves in need of orthodontics if their gum or bone tissue was damaged enough to allow their teeth to migrate, but braces have to be removed if the patient suffers recurrent inflammation. In modern times, however, it is rarer for blood sugar to be uncontrolled long enough to result in major dental problems. At our office, we are also certified to offer Invisalign orthodontic correction. Removable aligners do not cause any extra difficulties maintaining oral hygiene and provide us with opportunities to monitor the patient’s dental health every six weeks. They also put less force on the teeth, which is safer for diabetic patients.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

Although many people are resigned to seeing blood when they spit out their toothpaste, bleeding gums are not healthy and patients do not have to live with them. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, Dr. Seier and his staff are equipped to help patients recover from gum disease, but patients should understand their condition so they can take preventive measures.

Bleeding gums are nearly always the result of gingivitis, which is low-grade gum inflammation. This is the result of a bacterial infection. As bacteria build up in the gum pockets, they produce plaque, which clings to teeth near the gum line and hardens into tartar. Acids stick to tartar and irritate the gums. Brushing regularly helps to keep tartar at bay, but a brush with hard bristles can bruise the gums. This is why gentle, but thorough use of a soft-bristled brush is recommended.

Pregnant women are at particular risk for gingivitis due to hormonal changes. People on blood thinner medication or who suffer from dry mouth (a common medication side-effect) also are at increased risk for bleeding gums. It is especially important for these people to maintain regular appointments so professionals can clean their plaque and gum pockets.

Reducing Dental Anxiety in Children

It’s very important for children to have a friendly relationship with their dentist. At Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, we strive to make our youngest patients as comfortable as possible, but there are things parents can do that will help us to ensure their child’s health.

Visiting the dentist should be a familiar experience for children from an early age. We recommend that they come in for their first check-up when their first tooth comes in. But because children tend to be shy around strangers, they may need to be taught that the dentist and hygienists are new friends who want to help them not get a toothache. It is better not to emphasize to children that they need to be brave since this sends the message there’s something to be afraid of. A parent should also be honest with themselves about whether their own feelings about dental work are influencing the child.

At the office, we can explain to children what we’re going to do and give a demonstration of the instruments we use. It is better not to bring up procedures such as root canals the child is unlikely to need unless they’re really interested. Keep in mind while scheduling appointments that younger siblings are often more receptive to care if they can see an older sibling be examined first.

Nocturnal (Sleep) Bruxism

Are you waking up feeling fatigued after a long night of sleep? Are you waking up with facial pain or jaw discomfort? Sleep bruxism, also known as nocturnal bruxism, is the medical term for clenching or grinding teeth during sleep. A person may notice this consciously, or subconsciously, but it’s important to seek treatment immediately once you realize that this is becoming a problem. Our doctors at Advantage Dentistry may suggest a night guard to alleviate the problem.

Nocturnal bruxism can be a cause for concern depending on the frequency of the person clenching and grinding their teeth. This behavior can cause teeth to become worn down, chipped, or cracked over time, leading to costly dental procedures in the future. Wearing a night guard during sleep can eliminate pressure that is put on the jaw and reduce symptoms of bruxism.

If you have questions or concerns regarding nocturnal bruxism, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a simple procedure involving removal of excess gum tissue.  At Advantage Dentistry, our doctors perform this in order to place restorations on a tooth or to expose more of the tooth for aesthetics.  The short procedure is performed in the office with local anesthetic and gum tissue is removed with a scalpel or laser tool.

If gum tissue is being removed to make room for a restoration like a crown to fit around the tooth, you may only need gum tissue removed from one or two teeth.  Some patients naturally have more gum tissue than others and it can result in the appearance of short teeth or a gummy smile.  In this case, your dentist can remove excess gum tissue along the entire gum line to expose more of each tooth and create an even, stunning smile! If you think your smile would benefit from crown lengthening, please contact us.

Scaling and Root Planing

The doctors and staff of Advantage Dentistry see patients struggling with every stage of gum disease.  Gum disease can progress quickly without a regular oral hygiene routine, but more people are looking for ways to prevent that from happening.  Scaling and root planing are two steps in one deep cleaning procedure your dentist performs to help stop gum disease in its tracks.

Scaling is the term for removing all plaque and buildup from the surface of the tooth, all the way down to the gums.  Root planing is the process of contouring and shaping teeth may be done to reshape the tooth closer to the gums.  Each of these steps is important to complete so as the gums heal they have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to.  Local anesthetic is used during this procedure, and depending on your case your dentist may recommend completing the treatment over two appointments. Most patients only experience a minor soreness afterward, and are in a great position to fend off gum disease!

Sedation Options

Most of us don’t enjoy visiting the dentist’s office, but it is our goal at Advantage Dentistry to make patients feel comfortable no matter what. Whether you suffer from dental anxiety or desire to take the edge off of a dental cleaning, we have a sedation option that is safe for you. Allow us to explain the difference so that when we see you during your consultation, you’ll have a better understanding of which you may prefer.

  • Oral Conscious – With oral conscious sedation, the patient remains awake but is left in a heightened state of mind. For this option, you will need someone to drive you home after your procedure.

  • Nitrous Oxide – Nitrous, also known as laughing gas, leaves the patient in a euphoric state feeling completely relaxed. All feelings of fear and anxiety will fade away and you will be able to respond to the doctor if need be. Nitrous wears off once the procedure is complete, allowing you to return to your daily activities.

  • Anxiolysis – This light sedative is not as strong as oral sedation but is recommend for those who have mild to moderate anxiety. You will be able to drive yourself home after anxiolysis is administered.

If you have questions or concerns about sedation options, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Root Canal Procedure

When our doctors at Advantage Dentistry suggest a root canal, this means that the tooth or teeth in question are damaged or decayed. Root canals may sound terrifying, but advances in dental technology over the years make them less painful. In fact, it’s more painful living with a decayed tooth than it is to sit through a root canal procedure. If you have a root canal coming up, we guarantee to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

A root canal saves a natural tooth when it has become diseased. This can improve chewing, protect surrounding teeth from becoming damaged and improve your natural appearance. A root canal is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal becomes inflamed or infected. During the procedure, the area surrounding the tooth will be kept dry. Our doctor will then create an opening in the crown of the tooth and clean the pulp that has become inflamed. After the area is sealed, a temporary filling will be placed. Once the tooth heals, you’ll have your final visit where a permanent crown will be placed.

If you have questions or concerns about the root canal procedure, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Sealants

Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth.  Regular oral hygiene is important for children to establish, but a sealant is the best defense against early tooth decay.  At Advantage Dentistry, we apply dental sealants to our adolescent patients to preserve their teeth and set them up for a lifetime of great oral health!

Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14.  These teeth have pits and grooves on the chewing surface that trap food and bacteria.  The best time to have a sealant placed is when the molars first come in to make sure they are protected early.  Sealants are a quick and painless step to take to protect your oral health.  When the plastic resin is applied, it fills any pits and grooves on the surface and then hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, so bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay, and tooth enamel is protected from plaque and acids.  Sealants can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years and can be reapplied if necessary.

To learn more about dental sealants and all the services we provide, visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information.  To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275.

What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a procedure to remove a frenulum, which is a muscular attachment between two tissues, from the mouth. We perform frenectomies at Advantage Dentistry to correct a number of issues patients may have with their teeth, lips, and tongue.  There are three frenulums in your mouth.  One is located underneath your tongue, and removing this is called a lingual frenectomy.  Patients with an enlarged frenulum underneath their tongue will not be able to move their tongue freely.  This can impede breastfeeding interferes with speech and is often called ‘tongue tie’. Lingual frenectomies are typically performed on young patients, who can recover quickly and continue to develop their speech.

The other two frenulums are between the front teeth (both upper and lower) and connect the inner surface of the lip with the gum. Removing this attachment is called a labial frenectomy.  Patients who have receding gums can benefit from this procedure because a strong frenulum from the gum to the lip can cause extra pulling on the gums and lead to further recession.

Dental Bonding Breakage

Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that our doctors at Advantage Dentistry use to fix chips, cracks, or fractures in teeth. Accidents happen, so if you chip a tooth, dental bonding can be used to repair it. Though dental bonding has the same appearance of tooth enamel, it doesn’t have the same strength. Though dental bonding has many advantages and can last up to 7 years with proper oral hygiene, we’d like to let you know what to do if the bonding breaks.

Dental bonding is made up of composite resin like clay, and it molds to the tooth that needs repair. The success of your bonding isn’t up to the dentist however, it’s up to you. Dental bonding can be damaged by acidic foods and eventually wear over time if a patient isn’t careful. It’s important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to ensure that the bonding stays intact. If you notice a difference in the tooth that has been bonded or notice chips or cracks on the tooth, give us a call immediately as it may need to be restored.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental bonding or cosmetic dentistry, please give us a call. To learn about our services we provide at the practice, visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information. Invisalign Orthodontic Treatment

If you desire a straighter smile, Invisalign makes it easy. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are not only smooth and comfortable to wear, but also removable. This allows patients to live their life the way they want to, without worrying about metal brackets, wire tightening, or brushing and flossing in between braces. At Advantage Dentistry, we are excited to offer Invisalign to patients.

After our doctors map out your treatment plan, your aligners will be created in the Invisalign lab. Once they return to the office, the aligners will fit comfortably on your teeth. Each aligner is designed to shift certain teeth at a time, moving them horizontally and vertically, and even rotating them when needed. You’ll need to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day for two weeks to maximize their potential to get the desired results. Treatment time depends on the individual case, but once your treatment is over, our doctors will discuss retainer options.

If you would like to discuss your orthodontic treatment options, please give us a call or visit www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about Invisalign. To book an appointment with one of our dentists at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call 716-877-2275.

Drink Water for Optimal Oral Health

Having a healthy mouth depends on what you choose to put into it. Sugary beverages such as soda and juice can leave unwanted sugar behind on your teeth. Water, however, cleans your mouth with every sip, which is why our doctors at Advantage Dentistry want to explain the benefits of drinking more to benefit your smile.

Fluoride is nature’s cavity fighter and a healthy amount can be found in the water that we drink. Water washes away leftover food particles that weren’t removed by brushing and flossing. Additionally, because saliva is our mouth’s primary defense against tooth decay, drinking water replenishes it while keeping us hydrated. Drinking water is not only beneficial to your oral health, it’s important for your overall health! So next time you reach for a beverage to wash down your food, go guilt-free with water.

If you have questions or concerns about dental health, give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Flossing with Bridges

At Advantage Dentistry, Dr. Seier has successfully carried out dental restorations for over thirty years. But in order to get the most out of their new teeth, patients need to know how to adjust their oral hygiene habits. Fortunately, caring for fixed bridges is easy once patients know what tools are available to them.

Flossing is an important part of keeping the area around a fixed bridge healthy. But with no gap between the prosthetic teeth, an alternative means of getting floss over or under the bridge is necessary. Some floss manufacturers make this easy by providing floss with stiffened tips, but regular floss can be looped around a bridge with an instrument called a threader. Similar to a big, floppy sewing needle, threaders are familiar tools to anyone who has ever worn braces.

Another hygienic tool used with both bridges and orthodontics is the proxy brush, also known as a Christmas tree brush. When bridges are supported by implants instead of by pontic teeth, there may be room to use a proxy brush to dislodge debris. Other specialized tips for use on implants can also be attached to toothbrush handles and water picks.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Stains

At Advantage Dentistry, we provide patients with solutions for stained teeth. However, there are different kinds of stains, and different treatments need to be applied depending on whether a stain is intrinsic to the tooth or extrinsic. An extrinsic stain only affects the outermost layers, but an intrinsic stain could indicate a problem with the tooth’s health.

Bleaching is a useful tool for combatting extrinsic stains. It affects the teeth on a superficial level, removing evidence of dark liquids and smoke. But intrinsic stains affect the core of the tooth. They are caused by exposure to excessive amounts of fluoride or tetracycline antibiotics during the tooth’s formation or by inflammation of the pulp. Although intrinsic stains can be covered with veneers, pulp inflammation can cause pain and infection, requiring it to be removed.

Fortunately, Dr. Seier is greatly experienced in performing root canals. After the inflamed pulp is removed, it is normal for the tooth to be filled and sealed. But for cosmetic restorations, the doctor and patient can discuss whether it might be necessary to replace the entire crown.

Advantages of Invisalign

Most of us desire a straighter smile, but sometimes we don’t have time to abide by the aesthetic disadvantages that come with traditional braces. Fortunately, for adults and teenagers, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry provide patients with Invisalign so you can straighten your smile without worrying about your appearance. Invisalign consists of plastic aligner trays that are removable and virtually invisible so that you can eat, brush, and floss as you normally would.

After our doctors map out your Invisalign treatment plan, you will be giving a set of aligners. As you wear each set of aligners for the recommended 20-22 hours a day, your teeth will gently and gradually begin to shift into place. During this time, because the trays are removable, you don’t have as many dietary restrictions as you would with traditional braces, therefore you can eat whatever you’d like, whenever you’d like. Additionally, you can continue to brush and floss as you normally would, because there are no arches or wires that you need to maneuver around.

If you have questions or concerns regarding Invisalign, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Dental Abscess

Most of us know how painful a canker sore can feel, and a dental abscess is no different. An abscessed tooth is an infection caused by tooth decay, periodontal disease, or a cracked tooth that hasn’t been treated. This infection occurs when pus builds up at the root tip in the jaw bone. Fortunately, regardless of the cause, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry can help you treat the problem and prevent abscesses from forming in the future.

By practicing proper oral hygiene on a daily basis you are already reducing your risk of developing a tooth abscess. However, if your teeth become loose or chipped, you should visit us immediately to correct the problem. Signs of a dental abscess may include deep cavities, gum inflammation, tooth sensitivity and/or limited ability to open the mouth. Dental abscess treatment may include antibiotics, cleaning the tooth, or root canal treatment depending on the severity.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental abscesses or your oral health, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Treating Bad Breath in Children

A pleasing smile requires a nice smell as well as a nice appearance, and at Advantage Dentistry, we help our patients to maintain both. Children have some particular challenges with bad breath (also known as halitosis) which may require a different approach than we take with adults.

Bad breath is generally caused by bacterial growth. There are several situations in which this is more likely to happen, including the patient suffering from dry mouth and nasal drip. Dry mouth is a problem for children who mouth-breathe, as well as those who are on medications for ADHD or anxiety or simply don’t remember to drink enough water during play. While a specialist may be necessary to help with breathing problems, we can recommend ways of increasing saliva flow, including sugar-free candy.

Nasal drip is a common result of sinus infections, but it can also be caused by a foreign object stuck in the nasal passages. The creviced tissues of the tonsils are an ideal spot for bacteria to grow in and most children haven’t had them removed yet. These patients may benefit from the use of non-alcoholic mouthwash. The tongue is another environment which is ideal for bacteria, so bad breath could be due to as simple a problem as the child not knowing the importance of tongue-brushing.

Acid Reflux and Tooth Erosion

As patients age, we at Advantage Dentistry work to stay in touch with them so we can respond to their changing needs. One of the changes adults experience in their oral health is the increased risk posed by acid reflux. Dr. Seier offers many options for repairing crown damage, but we want patients to know how to prevent problems before they experience pain or wear.

A patient is said to be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) if their stomach acid escapes into their esophagus at least twice a week. The esophagus commonly develops ulcers as a result, but it’s not just soft tissue that is harmed by stomach acid. Tooth enamel also dissolves when repeatedly exposed, and over time, people with GERD develop teeth that are sensitive, discolored, and misshapen enough to impact their bite function.

Changes in diet are usually necessary for controlling acid reflux. Fried meats, cheese, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, and foods and drinks which are themselves highly acidic, such as garlic and tomato juice, are all contributors, but patients should avoid eating anything in large quantities immediately before lying down at night. For cases in which acid reflux has already caused enamel erosion, we have natural-colored fillings and partial crown restorations.

Mini Implants

At Advantage Dentistry we are excited to offer the latest dental products, and want patients to know that mini dental implants make treatments possible for patients who could not benefit from traditional implants. Mini dental implants are about half the diameter of a traditional dental implant. This allows them to be used in narrow spaces where regular implants were not an option.

The small size makes it possible for them to be inserted right through the gums into the bone. No incision means no stitches, and eliminates the need for a recovery period. This means the restoration or denture can usually be placed right away or shortly after.  Mini implants can also be used to install a full upper or lower denture. Between 4 and 6 mini implants are placed along the gum line to serve as the base for securing the denture. Any of our doctors can tell you if a mini implant is a good solution for you.

Makeover Your Smile With Veneers

At Advantage Dentistry, we see a lot of patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their smile.  There are many cosmetic procedures available to correct tooth alignment or color, but veneers the best way to give your natural smile an overall makeover.  Veneers are thin porcelain shells that bond directly to the surface of your teeth, and give you the opportunity to completely change the appearance of your smile and still look natural.

Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, chipped or cracked teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a dazzling smile with veneers.  Veneers can be applied in as little as two visits.  First, you and your dentist will discuss what shape and look is best for your new smile and an impression of your teeth will be taken.  This impression is sent to a dental lab where your veneers will be manufactured in order to custom-fit the final product.  Veneers can typically be fabricated within 14 days, and on your final visit the veneers are bonded to your teeth for you to wear for a lifetime.

Periodontitis

As we’ve previously mentioned, gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease that is usually reversible in its earliest stage. Periodontitis, however, is an advanced form of periodontal disease and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. As periodontitis progresses, you may notice more serious changes in your gums, such as gums that pull away from your teeth, loose teeth, or a persistent bad taste in your mouth. Though our doctors at Advantage Dentistry can treat the problem, we prefer that you take preventive measures.

The longer plaque and tartar remain on your teeth, the more you increase your risk of developing periodontal disease. Healthy gums are firm and pale pink in color. If your gums are puffy and bleed easily, you should visit our doctors at Advantage Dentistry immediately, to prevent the problem from becoming worse. The best ways to prevent periodontitis, as well as gingivitis, is by practicing proper oral hygiene and brush your teeth at least twice a day. Don’t forget to floss!

If you have questions or concerns about periodontal disease, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Gingivitis

The most common symptom of gingivitis is spitting blood in the sink while you brush. It sounds a little gross, but it’s important to know that you can prevent this from happening. Gingivitis develops when poor oral hygiene habits are practiced. If you notice swollen or puffy gums, dark red gums, bad breath, or gums that are receding, please schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Advantage Dentistry.

Our doctors are dedicated to providing patients with healthy gums, but this cannot be achieved by our doctors alone. It’s a dual effort between the doctor and the patient. Anyone can develop gingivitis, but you increase your risk if you’re a smoker, have a poor diet, or suffer from dry mouth. Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis which can eventually lead to tooth loss. Be sure to talk to your dentist about risk factors for gum disease and discuss your treatment options if you’ve been diagnosed with gingivitis.

Dry Mouth Discomfort

Dry mouth can be uncomfortable and it can interfere with eating, speaking, swallowing if it persists. Dry mouth is a condition that occurs when the glands in the mouth that make saliva aren’t functioning properly. Saliva neutralizes acids and helps fight against tooth decay. It also helps digest the food you eat and helps teeth during the remineralization process. If you are suffering from symptoms of dry mouth, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry can develop a treatment plan for you.

Symptoms of dry mouth include a sticky, dry feeling in the mouth or throat, a dry tongue, cracked lips, gum irritation, and/or bad breath and mouth sores. The only proper way to treat dry mouth is to identify its cause. Dry mouth commonly occurs as a side effect of medications. Other causes include dehydration, diabetes, chewing tobacco, and hormonal imbalances. Depending on the cause, our doctors may treat this problem with an over-the-counter prescription medication or a saliva substitute.

If you suffer from dry mouth discomfort, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Dry Sockets

We do our best at Advantage Dentistry to ensure that patients understand their post-operation instructions. By avoiding the use of straws, birth control, smoking, or tobacco products, and by rinsing their mouths by gently swirling around saltwater, they can minimize their chances of developing a dry socket. However, complications do happen, particularly when tooth extractions required cutting through gum or bone tissue, which is why we want patients to understand the procedure if a dry socket develops.

Following a successful extraction, a blood clot will seal off the socket. If this clot doesn’t form or is removed before the socket heals, the socket may dry out and infection will set in. This is a very painful process which is usually apparent two days after surgery. If they are experiencing severe pain or can see that the clot is out of place, patients should immediately seek our help. We can prescribe painkillers and antibiotics and will dress the wound with medicated paste or cloth. The wound dressing will have to be replaced every few days until the socket is healed, but the patient is usually back on course for a good recovery after this.

Losing a Permanent Tooth

While losing a permanent tooth is a painful disaster, there is a possibility that an intact tooth can be saved. Doing so will require swift action by a knowledgeable patient, which is why we at Lehigh Valley Smiles are providing this guide.

The American Dental Association recommends liquids for cleaning lost teeth and containers for transporting them. First aid kits at sporting events and other places where dental disasters are likely to occur should be stocked with these. But in their absence, patients should rinse the lost tooth off with milk or saltwater and then place it back in the socket. (If they have access to gauze, they should bite on that to keep the tooth in place.) If the tooth cannot be reinserted or the patient is unsure which way it should face, it should be kept in the patient’s cheek. The next best thing is to keep it in a container with saltwater or milk, but the most important thing is to keep it clean and moist.

Teeth have the best chance of being saved if seen by a dentist within an hour of being knocked out. However, a lost tooth is not a life-threatening injury and should not take precedence over more serious wounds. Only permanent, natural teeth can be saved; prematurely lost baby teeth will be replaced with spacers to make room for the permanent teeth, and lost implants must be replaced.

Night Guards

Advantage Dentistry offers custom night guards to help patients overcome the negative effects of bruxism. Bruxism is regular teeth grinding or clenching of the jaw. Stress can intensify teeth grinding, but it is most often caused by an abnormal bite or crooked teeth.

Some teeth grinders consciously grind their teeth and clench their jaw.  Some only do so while asleep, and may not even realize it. Waking up with a dull headache or experiencing pain and stiffness in your jaw are signs you may be grinding your teeth overnight, and shouldn’t be ignored.  Patients who continually grind their teeth often end up needing crowns, bridges, root canals and implants. In severe cases tooth loss can occur, and partial or complete dentures may be needed.

Night guards look similar to mouth guards worn by athletes but serve a different purpose. A dentist uses an impression of your teeth to ensure a custom fit, and the night guard is manufactured in a dental lab. Wearing a custom night guard protects the surface of the teeth, and also properly aligns the jaw to improve breathing and sleep. If you think you a custom night guard could help you, please contact us.

ZOOM! Whitening

At Advantage Dentistry we receive inquiries from patients just like you about how they can whiten their teeth.  We offer ZOOM! Whitening to patients looking to treat stained teeth or whiten their natural teeth.  When surface stains penetrate the tooth enamel, they can darken the color of the dentin, the hard tissue layer of your tooth under the enamel. Once the dentin is darkened, it can make the whole tooth appear yellow. Successful whitening systems go below the tooth enamel to reach the dentin.

ZOOM! Whitening combines whitening gel with an activator light to penetrate the enamel and break up stains at the dentin layer. Once the gel is applied to your teeth, the light activates and accelerates the whitening process.  When the chemical reaction lightens the color of the dentin, the whole tooth is free to become whiter. A dentist can tell you based on the level of staining on your teeth what results you can expect from ZOOM!  Patients have left the office after an hour treatment with a smile up to ten shades whiter!

If you are interested in a professional whitening system that delivers dramatic results, contact us to find out more about ZOOM! Whitening. The Dangers of DIY Orthodontics

Last February, the American Association of Orthodontists released a survey which found that 13% of their members have treated someone who attempted to use homemade corrective devices on themselves. This was a follow-up to a public service announcement last year warning people of the dangers of this, and we at Advantage Dentistry want our patients to understand why DIY orthodontics are a bad idea, as well.

Orthodontics is basically the practice of shifting living bones through each other. This is not a process which should be rushed, as the jaw bones need to rebuild themselves after the teeth have moved position. If the teeth are pushed too quickly in an attempt to reduce costs or treatment time, it is likely the jaw will be so compromised that the teeth will fall out or shift back.

Many of the devices non-professionals suggest using as wires are also simply not safe to put inside the body. Fibrous ties can rot, and without brackets, they can slide into the gum pockets. Likewise, rubber bands placed directly on teeth instead of on brackets will choke off the teeth’s blood vessels.

We strive to keep prices low for our patients. Please see us if you are bothered by misaligned teeth instead of trying something on yourself which will end up costing you much more.

Effects of Thumb Sucking

Advantage Dentistry has been a resource for many families over the years, including those who have just had their first child. Often, parents are aware that there are potential dangers associated with pacifiers and thumb sucking but aren’t sure whether or not there’s a problem, so we wanted to offer some guidance.

Thumb sucking is normal and not a cause for worry in children under the age of three. However, if the child keeps doing it after beginning to lose their baby teeth, the habit could result in misaligned adult teeth, overbites, misaligned jaws, and changes in mouth structure. This is also true of sucking pacifiers and of thrusting the tongue against the front teeth, which is sometimes a habit children form to replace thumb sucking.

If possible, parents should explain to their child why thumb sucking is a bad habit and include them in efforts to get them to stop. Sometimes there is a deeper psychological issue behind it, such as anxiety, which may require the attention of a counselor.  But anxious parents should rest assured that if a child stops thumb sucking as a toddler, their jaws can usually shift back to the right position.

HPV-Associated Oral Cancers

Oral cancer screenings are a standard part of dental check-ups for adults, and at Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, we want our patients to be aware of the medical community’s increasing concern about the link between cancers of the throat and the human papilloma virus. Vaccinations against HPV are now recommended by the Center for Disease Control for all children, but while these vaccinations look promising for some kinds of cancers, we are still awaiting further evidence on whether they work for oral cancer or are useful to adults.

The vast majority of adults get an HPV infection at some point in their lives without even being aware of it. Oral cancers caused by tobacco and alcohol are still much more common and deadly than those associated with HPV. However, HPV throat cancers tend to occur further back in the throat, in an area called the oropharynx. Patients are less likely to notice discoloration or growths this far back until their tissue has been badly damaged, at which point the cancer is more difficult to treat.

Cancers of the oropharynx also tend to occur in a younger population than the alcohol and tobacco-associated cancers in the front of the mouth. Therefore, regardless of a patient’s age or whether they smoke, if they are sexually active and feel odd sensations in their throat, they should remember their dentist as an important resource for more than just the health of their teeth.

Caring for Dentures

At Advantage Dentistry, we work hard to provide patients with quality restorations including full-mouth dentures. As part of our commitment, we want to make sure our patients understand how to care for their dentures so that their new teeth will serve them for as long as possible.

Patients should always brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and that’s just as true for their dentures. Each night, dentures should be removed (this includes ones supported by implants), and patients should brush their gums and tongue before putting them back in each morning. However, the dentures themselves should not be brushed with the same kind of toothpaste as natural teeth. Lacking a naturally-produced film covering, dentures are easily scratched by minerals in normal toothpaste, and should only be scrubbed with toothpaste that is particularly made for them.

Dentures should never be allowed to dry out. They can be soaked overnight in room temperature or cooler water or in a cleaning solution as long as they do not have exposed metal parts which could rust. But they must never be placed in hot water—the material they are made of warps in high temperatures. Any deformity in a denture should only be repaired by a professional.

Sedation Options at Advantage Dentistry

Here at Advantage Dentistry, we offer two common types of sedation options to our patients: oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide. Neither of these options knocks you unconscious; however, they do ease your fears and help you receive treatment in a comfortable in a safe manner. If you are wondering what the difference is between the two, allow us to explain.

  • Nitrous Oxide is also known as laughing gas and it is the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry. We place a mask over the patient’s nose and it is administered by the patient inhaling the gas. You will fall into a euphoric state and our doctor can control the amount of sedation you receive. This is the only form of sedation where you may be able to drive yourself home.

  • Oral conscious sedation allows you to remain awake during the procedure, but you will be in a heightened state of relaxation. It is also possible that you will not remember part or all of your procedure. Oral conscious sedation is as easy as taking an aspirin and you will feel relaxed and at ease. You will need to have someone drive you to and from the office if you use oral conscious sedation for your safety.

If you have further questions about sedation options, give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Gum Pocket Reduction

If a patient is suffering from the advanced effects of periodontal disease, there are some minor surgeries which may be used to reverse its damage and prevent a relapse. Chief among these is a gum pocket reduction. This procedure usually requires little preparation and can be done in the office using local anesthesia.

Gum pocket reduction targets the soft tissue immediately surrounding the teeth. In a healthy mouth, the gum pockets the teeth fit into are snug and stable. However, there is always room between the gum and the tooth for bacteria to get into, and where the resulting plaque can trap acid. As bone and soft tissue near the plaque dissolves, there is more room for bacteria, accelerating the process.

After a scaling and planing, Dr. Seier will want to close off this safe haven for plaque. Usually, a gum pocket reduction only requires that a flap to cut in the nearby healthy gum tissue, stretched across the pocket, and fastened with a suture. Sometimes a more complex gum graft may be necessary, but most likely this will only be the case if the damage is severe.

Scott Seier, DDS, operates Advantage Dentistry at 2887, Elmwood Ave, Kenmore, NY, 14217. To set up an appointment, call 716-877-2275, or visit AdvantageDentistry.com and fill out a contact form.

Peri-Implantitis

Implants have an incredibly high success rate and are the most frequently recommended method for restoring individual teeth. However, they do sometimes fail and need to be removed. Given the enormous investment patients put into their implants, it is a shame to see this happen. The best thing patients can do to protect their new tooth is to be on guard against peri-implantitis.

The prefix “peri” means “around” and “itis” means inflammation. If the gum tissue surrounding an implant is inflamed, it could be due to a foreign object, such as leaking dental cement, irritating the tissue. This is unlikely to be the case, however, if the implant is more than a few days old. More commonly, gum inflammation is caused by an infection or by an excessive amount of plaque trapping acid and dissolving the nearby tissues, along with the metal rod of the implant’s base.

Preventing peri-implantitis requires a patient to maintain standard oral hygiene practices, including brushing (twice a day for two minutes each) and flossing. Neither the implant nor the bone it’s fused with are immune to corrosion, so if a patient has trouble maintaining oral hygiene, it is important to request a deep cleaning. Don’t ignore the potential consequences of gum inflammation.

Scott Seier, DDS, operates Advantage Dentistry at 2887, Elmwood Ave, Kenmore, NY, 14217. To set up an appointment, call 716-877-2275, or visit AdvantageDentistry.com and fill out a contact form.

Dental Anxiety

It is one thing for anxiety to affect your daily relationships, but when it starts to impact your overall health then it becomes a problem. Dental anxiety, or dental phobia, is much more serious than just getting sweaty palms and having sleepless nights before an appointment – it’s a paralyzing fear of dentists or dental treatment. Luckily, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry have the tools, techniques and gentle touch to help make regular dental visits as comfortable as possible for you.

The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your dentist. Once your dentist knows what your fears are, he or she will better be able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more relaxed. In addition, ask your dentist what’s happening at every stage of the procedure. This way you can mentally prepare for what’s to come.

If you suffer from dental anxiety, give us a call so we ease your fear. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Treating Sleep Apnea with a Snore Guard

At Advantage Dentistry our goal is to enhance the quality of life of our patients who come to use for their dental health needs and this includes snoring. Snoring is a common condition that can affect anyone. Occasional snoring may not be serious; however, if you are a habitual snorer, you risk impairing your sleep quality and developing poor daytime function.

Frequent snorers can be at risk for serious health problems, including obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea creates a variety of problems, including long interruptions of breathing, poor night’s sleep, chronic headaches and daytime sleepiness and fatigue. At Advantage Dentistry, we provide a snore guard as a treatment option. It has a unique inner lining that is softened by heat during the fitting process. This allows for a custom fit and is designed to keep your lower jaw comfortable and positioned slightly forward while sleeping.

Many of our patients prefer a snore guard as a practical and less invasive alternative to CPAP therapy. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Pregnancy Gingivitis

Excellent dental care is essential during pregnancy. Hormonal changes that occur can hinder the body’s normal response to bacteria which can cause periodontal infections. If you already have gingivitis, being pregnant can make it worse. At Advantage Dentistry we want pregnant mothers to be aware of pregnancy gingivitis and schedule a checkup with us if symptoms arise.

Swollen gums, which may be sore and more susceptible to bleeding, are common during this time. Pregnancy gingivitis is caused by the hormonal changes that increase blood flow to the gum tissue and cause your gums to be more sensitive, irritable, and swollen. If gingivitis is left unchecked, it may lead to a more serious gum infection called periodontitis. Periodontitis during pregnancy increases the chance of preterm birth. To manage swollen gums and to keep your mouth healthy, brush your teeth twice per day, especially after vomiting from morning sickness and schedule at least one oral checkup with one of our doctors during pregnancy.

If you are pregnant, please inform us while scheduling your next appointment. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Wisdom Tooth Decay

As we age, we acquire wisdom, and the same goes for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth appear between the ages of 17-21 and are known as the third set of molars. When they erupt correctly, healthy wisdom teeth can help you chomp your food a little faster.  However, if they start to cause you pain and discomfort, you may need to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors at Advantage Dentistry to discuss extraction.

If you bite on a piece of food that is too hard or you experience a mouth injury, wisdom teeth may become troublesome. They can also become cracked, broken, and decayed. Decay can form on any tooth surface, but when the decay begins to attack the wisdom teeth, depending on the position of the tooth it becomes difficult to clean. Depending on the individual case, your dentist may be able to fill the tooth, but even in cases where a filling could be successfully placed, if the wisdom tooth cannot be adequately maintained, recurrent decay can occur. Though many patients tend to procrastinate through the process, extraction is always best to avoid infection.

If your wisdom teeth are still intact and you have questions about removal, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Baby Tooth Care Tips

Baby teeth may be small, but they’re important. To help prevent the buildup of plaque bacteria that can lead to decay, our doctors at Advantage Dentistry recommend regularly cleaning your newborn’s gums with a damp washcloth following feedings. It’s important to start cleaning your child’s teeth before they come in to jumpstart a healthy smile.

Wipe the gums off after each feeding with a warm, wet washcloth or a dampened piece of gauze wrapped around your finger. In addition, take measures to prevent baby bottle tooth decay, a disease that causes severe, swift decay of baby teeth. To help prevent it, do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of formula or a sugary drink, such as juice. The possibility of tooth decay is directly related to the number of times that sugar comes in contact with the teeth. Your child’s baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. Without a healthy set of baby teeth, your child risks having trouble chewing and speaking clearly as they get older.

If you have questions about pediatric oral care, please give us a call. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.

Defining Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax, and central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Here at Advantage Dentistry, we always explore non-invasive treatment options first.

When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the muscles relax, your airway narrows or closes as you breathe in, and you can’t get an adequate breath in. Your brain senses this inability to breathe and briefly rouses you from sleep so you can reopen your airway. You may make a snorting, choking or gasping sound. When central sleep apnea occurs, you may awaken with shortness of breath or have a difficult time getting to sleep or staying asleep. Like with obstructive sleep apnea, snoring and daytime sleepiness can occur. Regardless of the type you have, it’s best to explore your treatment options.

If you sleep apnea is a concern of yours, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To schedule your appointment with Advantage Dentistry in Kenmore, NY, call our office at 716-877-2275 or visit our website www.advantagedentistry.com for more information about the services we provide.
